Virtual Buyer-Seller Meet (BSM) in leather sector.

A two-day Virtual Buyer Seller Meet (BSM) is being held on 5-6 August 2020 between Indian leather suppliers and their Peruvian partners. The Council for Leather Exports (CLE) under the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India has facilitated the participation from India, while the Embassy of India, with the help of Lima Chamber of Commerce, is coordinating the participation from the Peruvian side.

2. Several Indian companies known for their high quality leather goods as well as reputed exporters of leather goods are taking part in the BSM. Indian leather exports have shown a steady performance in recent years with “leather goods” segment registering a 22.8% growth in 2018-19.

3. Speaking at the inaugural event, the Chairman of Council of Leather Exports (CLE) Shri Aqeel Ahmed emphasized the importance that Indian leather industry attaches to its partnership with Peruvian consumers and leather firms. In his remarks, Ambassador of India Shri M. Subbarayudu, observed that the buyer seller meet in the field of leather has become an annual feature with CLE organizing trade missions to Peru every year since 2015, thereby enabling Indian and Peruvian partners to meet, affirm and renew their partnership. He listed potential products for cooperation and expressed hope that both sides make use of the virtual BSM to forge mutually beneficial partnerships for further enhancing trade and cooperation.

4. Among others, the event was participated by Joint Secretary Ms. Nidhi Mani Tripathi, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry; Mr. Sanjay Leekha, Vice Chairman, Council for Leather Exports; and Ms. Monica Chavez, Manager, Foreign Trade Centre, Lima Chamber of Commerce (LCC).

5. Government of India identified leather sector as one of the focus industrial sectors to become a leading global supplier to the world. This is sought to be achieved by injecting innovative technology, compliance with the best global standards and enhancing skill development.
